Opposition protests continue in Assembly

Thiruvananthapuram: The Opposition continued intermittent protests against Excise Minister K. Babu in Kerala Assembly on Wednesday demanding his ouster. On two occasions, they moved into the well of the House. Later, they walked out in protest against the Speaker disallowing an adjournment motion seeking discussion on rehabilitation of people affected by Vizhinjam Port project.

Palode Ravi elected Deputy Speaker of Kerala Assembly

Palode RaviKerala Assembly today elected Congress nominee Palode Ravi as its Deputy Speaker. He won 74 votes against 65 for E. Chandrasekharan of CPI.

Born at Palode in 1949 to P. Gangadharan Pillai and M. Saraswathy Amma, Mr. Ravi entered politics as worker of Kerala Students Union. He has held different positions in the KSU, Youth congress and INTUC.

Water level in Mullaperiyar dam nears 140 feet

E. S. BijimolThiruvananthapuram: Minister for Water Resources P. J. Joseph told the Assembly that Kerala was repeatedly urging Tamil Nadu to divert water from Mullaperiyar Dam to Vaigai Dam in Tamil Nadu to avoid spillage.

Replying to questions, the Minister said that he hoped that Tamil Nadu would oblige. The State Government was also seeking intervention of the Union Government in the matter.
