Combating of food adulteration is the focus of the National Consumer Day being observed today.
India observes December 24 as Consumer Day as that was the day on which the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 received the assent of the President. The enactment of the Act was considered as a historic milestone in the consumer movement in the country.
Nearly, two lakh complaints have been filed before consumer complaints redress forums in Kerala since the inception of the Act.

Thiruvananthapuram: Welfare pensions will henceforth be paid on the 18th of every month from January next year.
The governmetn took the decision against the background of delays in payment of the pensions and accumulation of arrears.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy announced that the Finance Department will submit a status report regarding the money handed over to treasuries for the disbursal of welfare pensions to him every month. He would draw his salary only after getting the report.

Political leader Cheriyan Philip has expressed regret over his participation in the move that led to the ouster of K. Karunakaran from the Chief Ministership in 1995 and made a public apology through facebook.
Mr. Philip, who had left Congress later to join the CPI (M), said in his facebook post that he was making the apology on the fifth death anniversary of Karunakaran because he continued to be troubled by the feeling of guilt.
