Thiruvananthapuram: The government proposes to bring the Metran Kayal near Kumarakom under paddy.
The clearance granted by the previous government for reclamation of the Kayal for a tourism project had invited widespread criticism and this had forced the then government to withdraw the order.
Agricultural Minister V. S. Sunil Kumar will visit the Kayal this month. The plan is to cultivate the land at government expense. The total area of the Kayal is 378 acre and plan to cultivate the area will be finalised after the Minister’s visit.
The government is also considering the feasibility of paddy field up for airport project at Aranmula.
Government is also considering amendment of the Kerala Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland Act to reverse some of the changes effected to the law by the previous government to dilute the provisions against reclamation of paddy fields.
