HC stays government decision to take over admissions to private medical colleges

Kerala High CourtThiruvananthapuram: Kerala High Court has stayed the decision of State government taking over the allotments to all seats in private self-financing medical colleges.

In an order on a petition filed by the college managements, the Court agreed with the managements’ contention that the action of the government was in contravention to the order of the Supreme Court.

The managements can make admissions on the basis of merit from the NEET list. The James Committee should ensure that the admissions are made on merit.

Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala said in a statement that the Court order was a set back to the government which had acted without proper deliberations. This had created a lot of confusion. It was to be doubted whether this was to help private colleges outside the State.

Health Minister K. K. Shylaja said that the government would not be going on appeal against the High Court order. The order was not a setback for the government. It had decided to take over the admissions to ensure social equity.

She added that the future of the students was of prime concern to the government and it was not for a fight with the managements. Talks with managements would be held on Monday.
