Thiruvananthapuram: Fires continue to range in the forest areas of Kerala with summer temperatures rising across Kerala.
NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System have identified several fires during past 48 hours in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Fires have also been detected near the boundaries of Silent Valley National Park in Kerala and Bandipur National Park in Karnataka.
Besides, fires occurred in Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary and forests adjoining Parambikulam. Forests on the on the edges of Periyar Tiger Reserve and adjoining forests have also caught fire. Fires have also occurred in protected areas near Munnar.
Earth observing satellite has also detected a single fire in Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary.
Environmental activists allege that the Forest Department was failing to take precautionary measures, despite a hot summer.
