Combating of food adulteration is the focus of the National Consumer Day being observed today.
India observes December 24 as Consumer Day as that was the day on which the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 received the assent of the President. The enactment of the Act was considered as a historic milestone in the consumer movement in the country.
The theme of the 2015 National Consumer Rights Day is “Safe & Healthy Food: Combating Food Adulteration”. Capacity building will be required to achieve the objective and consumers will have to e educated to fight the menace.
Nearly, two lakh complaints have been filed before consumer complaints redress forums in Kerala since the inception of the Act. Of these, nearly 95 per cent of the complaints have been disposed off. More than 10000 complaints were pending disposal as on September 30 this year. In addition more than 2000 complaints are pending before State and national commissions.
