Aruvikkara reservoir faces pollution problem

Aruvikkara reservoir near ThiruvananthapuramThiruvananthapuram: The pollution level of Aruvikkara reservoir, the source of drinking water to Thiruvananthapuram city, is increasing as summer advances.

Waste from surrounding areas and top soil released by building and other activities flow into the reservoir. Some areas of reservoir where there is no flow of water have turned almost into a cesspool. African weeds have accumulated in some areas. Visitors as well as locals throw waste materials into the reservoir. It also used for bathing and washing of cloths.

If some areas of the reservoir is turning into a, two areas of the reservoir has turned into a feast for the eyes with the blooming of lotus flowers.

The Water Authority, which is the custodian of the reservoir, has undertaken cleaning and desilting operations in some areas of the reservoir. However, large areas remain to be covered.

The water level in the reservoir is maintained by releasing water from the Peppara reservoir upstream. The reservoir has storage sufficient for the drinking water requirements of the city till the end of May. The water level in the reservoir was remaining more or less steady since February owing to summer rain.

The two main water treatment plants at Aruvikkara are functioning at their full capacity to meet the summer demand from the city. The old plant is also functioning near its capacity.
