Differences in LDF over Athirappally project

Athirappally water fallsThiruvananthapuram:  Differences have erupted in the Left Democratic Front over Athirappally hydroelectric project.

Environmentalists are also up in arms against Chief Minister Pinarai Vijayan and his Electricity Minister Kadakampally Surendran speaking in favour of the project.

The Electricity Minister had stated that the project had received environmental clearance twice. Project would be implemented only after addressing concerns of the people.

The CPI State Secretary Kanam Rajendran took umbrage to the Chief Minister and Electricity Minister announcing policy on such controversial issues without discussion in the Front.

Agriculture Minister V. S. Sunilkumar (CPI) also came out against the stand taken by Chief Minister and Electricity Minister.  The opinion of the people should be taken into consideration.

However, Mr. Vijayan maintained that Ministers could not be prevented from expressing opinion on subjects in their charge.  The LDF had discussed the project in the past. There was no need for concern about the project as it was not going to affect the flow of Athirappally water falls. However, the government would hold discussions with those opposing the project.

Replying to questions from the media, veteran leader V. S. Achuthanandan sought to allay fears about the project. The government would proceed with any anti-people measures. The views of the people on the project would be taken into consideration, he stressed.
